Lewandowski Architects share their remarkable extension of a period property in Windsor
Lewandowski Architects were commissioned by the owners of this substantial Victorian semi-detached property to transform and extend a series of compartmentalised rooms towards the rear of the property into one large open plan space.
The extension has been constructed in a classic-contemporary architectural style. It focuses on using high quality materials and construction detailing, rather than using elaborate and arbitrary architectural features.
It is comprised of stock brickwork that blends seamlessly with the existing Victorian property. Large format, steel frame glazed windows and doors elegantly, but sharply enhance the exterior aesthetic and provide a nod back to the original architectural period with a contemporary twist.
The architect was briefed to provide a visually, physically and aesthetically connected interior for cooking, lounging and dining that were also clearly defined as their own independent zones. The spaces had to function equally well for day to day family life and social entertaining. The result is a clean and crisp interior that is also tactile and robust. A limited palette of warm yet neutral tones connects the individual areas, making them feel one. Two large contemporary lantern rooflights flood the space with natural light and provide natural ventilation on warmer days. Expansive steel frame glazed doors open the space up onto a new south facing patio and garden.
Bespoke joinery, high quality finishes, lighting and a magnificent central kitchen by Bulthaup provide the centre pieces to the project. Other aspects of the scheme included the full refurbishment of all bathrooms, a new ground floor W.C, the complete refurbishment of the cellar and a new AV system that allows the client to monitor and control the house from anywhere in the world.
Lewandowski Architects managed the project from inception to completion carrying out all aspects of architectural and interior design on behalf of the client. The clients discerning tastes allowed Lewandowski Architects to finish the project to the highest standards of quality on a generous but considered budget of circa £250,000.
